Jharkhand | Ranchi: Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, has received approval for 36 additional postgraduate (PG) seats, taking its total postgraduate intake from 176 to 212 for the 2026-27 academic session. According to the updated PG Broad Specialty Seat Matrix released by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the expansion marks a significant increase in the institute’s capacity for specialist medical education and is expected to strengthen Jharkhand’s healthcare system by increasing the availability of trained specialists.
The additional seats have been approved across seven departments. Anaesthesiology has received eight additional seats, followed by Community Medicine and Microbiology with six each. General Medicine has gained five seats, Anatomy and Pharmacology four each, while Physiology has received three additional seats.
The expansion is expected to provide more medical graduates with opportunities to pursue postgraduate specialisation within the state. In the long term, the institute aims to contribute towards addressing the shortage of specialist doctors in Jharkhand and improving access to quality healthcare.
Focus on strengthening medical education
The institute attributed the achievement to the leadership and sustained efforts of Health Minister Dr Irfan Ansari, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Ajay Kumar Singh and RIMS Director Prof. (Dr) Dipendra Kumar Sinha. The RIMS director congratulated the Dean of Academics and the entire team, including doctors, department heads, faculty members, officials and employees, for their contribution towards securing the additional seats.
Special appreciation was extended to those involved in completing the required procedures, documentation, academic standards and regulatory formalities necessary for the approval. The institute described the expansion as the outcome of collective commitment, coordinated efforts and teamwork.
With the increase in postgraduate seats, RIMS is expected to play a greater role in developing specialist doctors within Jharkhand. The expanded intake is also expected to improve the state’s capacity to provide specialised medical services and reduce dependence on healthcare facilities outside the state.
The institute said the achievement represents not merely an increase in academic seats but an important step towards building a stronger healthcare system and improving the future of medical education in Jharkhand.
