Jharkhand | Ranchi: The Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, achieved a significant milestone in advanced eye care by successfully performing four modern cornea transplant surgeries in a single day on November 6, 2026. All four procedures were conducted free of cost, providing much-needed relief to patients, particularly those from economically weaker backgrounds.

The surgeries were performed using Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK), an advanced corneal transplantation technique. The procedures were led by Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Kumar, Head of the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, along with his specialist team.

Advanced Technique for Corneal Treatment

DSEK is a specialised procedure in which only the damaged inner endothelial layer of the cornea is replaced, rather than transplanting the entire thickness of the cornea. It is particularly beneficial for patients whose vision has been affected due to damage to this inner layer.

Compared with conventional full-thickness corneal transplantation, DSEK involves transplanting a smaller portion of corneal tissue. The technique offers an advanced treatment option for patients suffering from specific corneal conditions. The successful completion of four such procedures in one day reflects the growing capacity of RIO-RIMS Ranchi to provide advanced corneal transplant services in Jharkhand.

Free Surgeries Bring Relief to Patients

The fact that all four surgeries were performed free of cost makes the achievement particularly significant. It has helped patients access specialised eye treatment without the burden of surgical expenses. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Kumar said that Diwali symbolises light and happiness, making the successful surgeries especially meaningful.

Giving four patients hope of regaining their vision on the occasion was a matter of satisfaction and pride for the entire team, he said. He added that providing the procedures free of cost reflected the institution’s commitment to public service and making quality healthcare accessible to patients in need.

Appeal to Promote Eye Donation

Prof. Kumar also highlighted the importance of eye donation, saying that donated corneas can help restore vision and bring light into the lives of people suffering from corneal blindness.

RIO and the Government Eye Bank at RIO-RIMS Ranchi continue to work towards strengthening advanced eye care services and providing treatment to patients in need. The four successful transplants on Diwali underline the role of specialised public healthcare institutions in making advanced medical procedures accessible to more people.
