New Delhi: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has taken cognisance of the death of tribal woman leader Nisha Bhagat in Jharkhand. Commission member Dr Asha Lakra expressed grief over the incident and said the commission would soon write to senior officials of the Jharkhand government, seeking a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding her death.
Nisha Bhagat had reportedly gone live on Facebook shortly before her death, sharing her distress and personal grievances. Her social media broadcast has raised several questions regarding the circumstances leading to the incident.
Dr Lakra said the commission intends to ascertain the circumstances and reasons behind the tragic incident. She emphasised that all aspects of the case should be examined thoroughly and that an impartial investigation is necessary to establish the facts.
The NCST will seek detailed information from the state government regarding the incident and the steps taken by the authorities to investigate it. Dr Lakra reiterated that the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes remains committed to safeguarding the interests, security, dignity and constitutional rights of tribal communities.
She said the commission is sensitive towards cases involving injustice, harassment or violation of the rights of tribal individuals and remains prepared to take appropriate action wherever necessary. The commission’s intervention is expected to bring greater attention to the investigation and ensure that the circumstances surrounding Nisha Bhagat’s death are examined comprehensively.
